Why The American Institute Of Architects Was Established

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) was founded in New York City in 1857. At the time there were no standards for what an architect did and what their educational background entailed. The AIA was created to both bring respectability to the profession as well as supporting the ongoing education of its members. Soon after it was founded additional chapters opened in cities across America. The headquarters of the AIA was eventually moved to Washington D.C. and it is located at 173 New York Avenue.

The current top executive of the AIA is Robert Ivy. He is the CEO and EVP of the organization. He was brought in to lead the AIA in February 2011. His background includes 15 years being the editor in chief of the industries premiere publication, Architectural Record. This publication is part of McGraw-Hill Companies. Robert Ivy was also a vice president and editorial director for Mcgraw-Hill where he led a number of other publications focused on architecture.
