American Institute of Architects and the Shaping of an Industry

Architecture industry is a unique sector that needs creativity, imagination, the capability to understand the changing needs of the customers, efficient solutions through workable structures, and more. Though it was considered as a traditional industry, it is a sector that receives constant changes in the regular intervals of time. Recent years, the sector is facing challenges due to the changing priorities of the customers and their diverse aspirations. While this gives new opportunities for the architects, American Institute of Architects – the American professional association of architects – leads some revolutions from the front. The association working in the lines of non-profit coordination committee has the story of shaping the industry for nearly 150 years. Visit AIA at wikipedia.org to know more.

Especially in the recent years, American Institute of Architects is propagating new ideas and themes into the architecture world under the leadership of Robert Ivy. He is the Chief Executive of the premier architecture organization in the world and known for anchoring many novel approaches that can make the architecture improving the lives of the people who are living in buildings. Under his leadership, the association has announced a ten-year commitment in the year 2012 to generate development plans that are focused on sustainability, resistance to natural disasters, and public health, especially in the urban areas. Interestingly, these are the most important focus areas of people in the recent years when they wanted the building solutions.

For the purpose, the AIA collaborates with universities, research groups, architecture organizations and institutions, and more, and prompt them to come up with solutions with proven results. It provides research grants, plans to set up a community in an international city, and various technology initiatives to bring more desired and efficient solutions. Robert Ivy said that public health is one of the core areas of architecture goals in the recent years. While the last decade looked for formalism, this decade has priority for solutions that are socially engaged. Robert Ivy says that the change of concept is largely due to the new architects into the industry. He thinks that they are diverse and wanted solutions of hands-on buildings that address the needs of a diverse population.

While coming to the community health, Robert Ivy observes that smart architecture ideas can reduce the rate of non-communicable diseases in cities. This is particularly true when dealing with heart diseases, diabetes, and other lifestyle diseases. He says that buildings should be designed to demand physical activities for this purpose, and a right mix of walk up stairs, long corridors, and more can produce excellent results in the long run. Technology is another great integration into the sector in the recent years. The designated apps can reduce the communication gaps between architects and common people to improve the interaction and collaboration between both the parties to ensure effective architecture ideas and solutions.

The American Institute of Architects: Stepping Stones to the Future.

The American Institute of Architects was founded in 1857. It is a non-profit organization that helps current architects and future architects maintain the highest standard possible in the profession. The organization is headquartered in Washington D.C. The group also helps those in professions that are related to architecture as well.

As of now, there are more than ninety-thousand members of the AIA. The group was first called the New York Society of Architects. The name was changed in order to attract more members to the group without compromising the constitution the group lives by. As of 2008, the AIA has more than three hundred chapters dedicated to the work and influence of architects and the work they have been able to accomplish for the good of the group.

To become part of the American Institute of Architects a person must fit into one of these five categories. The first is called Architect Member. These are people who are officially licensed to practice architecture in the U.S. The second category is called Associate Members. These are people who aren’t licensed yet but are working toward the goal with the help of a professional architect. The third category is called International Associate Members. These are people who have the proper license and or the equivalent outside the United States of America. The fourth category of people is called Emeritus Members. These members have been a part of the group for fifteen years in a row or sixty-five years and older. This group also includes those who can no longer work in the profession as well. The final category is called the Allied Members. This is a group of people that includes many of the professions that are related to architecture. A couple of examples are engineers or planners.

One of the main people in charge of the American Institute of Architects is the current Executive Vice President and CEO Robert Ivy. He has fought hard to keep this profession alive and cut down on the amount of red tape in the group. He has been at the helm of the group since 2011 and wants to make the group a strong force in the new twenty-first century. He has been a key part of the effort for architects to be more socially responsible for the planet.

With such a mindset, the American Institute of Architects will maintain social responsibility and keep members happy.
